Whether you are selling a product, service or idea your presentation is every bit as important as the product, service, or idea itself. You can make the best tasting and healthiest cereal on the planet, but if the packaging doesn’t catch the consumers eye no one is going to want to try your product. You might as well wrap it in plain brown paper for all the good your work in making the product will do you. The same holds true for those offering a service, presenting an idea or even those who are applying for a job or running for public office.
First impressions really do count in this fast paced world of ours and as the old saying goes “you never get a second chance to make a first impression.” This really is true and that is why you need to give as much thought to the presentation or public persona as you do all that behind the scenes labor.
Take interviewing for a job as an example. You may know everything there is to know about the job you are applying for, you may have gotten a good education, and had years of experience in the field. In other words you may have all the ingredients that would make you the right choice for the job, but, if you show up looking like something the cat dragged in, or interview poorly, you’ll never get the chance to show them just how good you are at the job. Whether it seems fair or not, you have to appeal to the audience you are trying to convince.
For every successful product on the market there are thousand others just as great that fail. Why? Because these products weren’t presented in a fashion that made people want to purchase them. Their presentation was simply lacking in what the intended audience for the product wanting to see, hear, or know.
The same principal holds true in everything in life. Those politicians that we all complain about get elected because they know how to present themselves in a way that makes people like and have confidence in them.
Remember the good old pet rock and how trendy and popular it was? It was just a rock. However, the person who made millions off those rocks presented them in such a fashion that consumers both young and old felt that they just had to have one of these rocks. People laid down their hard earned money not because the product was good or even unique but, because of the presentation of the product.
So stop and consider just how important presentation is in everything. While all the labor put in behind the scenes will pay off it will only pay off if the presentation of results of that labor really reaches the targeted audience and draws them in.
